The internet and social media are scattered with GIFs, memes and cliché quotes telling us how change is difficult in the short term, but worth it in the long run. These memes and quotes encouraging us to commit to doing our best. But let’s be very honest about all this.. And what I am about to say comes from someone (me) who loves quotes..
So what am I about to say?.. Namely this… That the type of motivation provided through memes, quotes and gifs is temporary. Why?.. Because motivation unless under-girded by a strong practical internal and external support system will be temporary..
But the Good News is here are 3 practical and useful actions you can do to prepare you for a big change in your life. So that you can boldly move forward into your future with a sense of confidence knowing you’re prepared to win the game of life!
1.Be Practical with a Practical Plan
The best way to be prepared for any situation is to face it practically. Taking a step back from the overwhelm of the situation you are facing and creating a sound plan is the best first step. Having a general plan in place will give you the recipe of which to work and makes pivotal changes a little less scary. Be sure to break down the significant steps you will need to take into smaller action steps, so you don’t get overwhelmed by the big picture. A solid, practical plan will also give you a blueprint to refer back to when you find yourself lost in the midst of all the new.
2.Plan for the Worst but Hope for the Best
With your blueprint created, start working through the change(s) you are planning and try to identify any pitfalls that may occur. Be practical about these as well. Don’t jump to the “what if I fail” dramatics but consider issues such as reworking your schedule or what to do when you lose motivation. Planning for the worst of situations, but hoping for the best, will allow you to be prepared without dwelling on the what-ifs.
3.Gather And Create Your Support System and Network
Very few people undergo major changes entirely on their own. Great for those people that make it through, but do not let that be your default plan on this journey. Gather a support system around you. People that love you and have your best interest at heart. Let these people know the change you are making, why, and ask for their help or support along the way. Teamwork makes the dream work after all.
So BIG changes can be frightening and intimidating. But, when we do these three things before we make the leap, we set ourselves up for success. Because what can make all the difference in achieving our goals, is when we approach any major change in our lives with practical actions, a game plan that allows for difficulties, and the right support system in place.
And always remember..
When you’re passionate about your goals, you don’t need external motivation. Your internal vision will carry you forward like a river”
